First outing on my new sail (replacement for the 7yr old Retro) was
initially a bit dissappointing...
New sail feels heavier in the hands than the old, despite being made from
noticeably thinner monofilm, and has less bottom-end drive when set up for
light winds. Frustrating actually.
After 1/2hr of constant re-tuning (hail to the Power-XT!!) in
just-too-light-to-plane winds, I'd started to suss out the set that the
sail likes. When set as powerful as possible (it just doesn't ever fill
out as much as the Retro did), it was just on the limit of what I'd call
acceptable.
Once *just* planing, it still doesn't feel to give as much pull as the old
sail, but I'll have to do a back-to-back assessment sometime to be sure.
Then the wind picked up a force...
Spent the next hour very well powered up and screaming along, and I have to
say the Gaastra is MUCH more stable and forgettable when blasting than the
old Retro.
It was when I finally came in and realised that I had NO outhaul tension
whatsoever, that I realised how impressive this was. It really has a
massive "natural range" just like the magazine tests said.
Anyway, a good session in the end but it remains to be seen whether I'll be
happy with the sail as a true replacement for the Retro.
Oh, and I get the feeling that it might be my last outing in a shortie this
year... Lovely and warm though, with only one other guy out.
